. new, police say excessive speed and wet roads led to a deadly accident in san jose. it happened around 12:30. police say the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree. two lanes were shut down while crews cleaned up the damage. efforts are being made to provide supplies and shelter to as many homeless people as possible. four men in the south bay died from hypothermia during this week's cold snap. three of them were homeless. the office of emergency services provided 600 blanketses to the agency ehc life builders. last night volunteers hit the streets passing out those blankets and other supplies to many of the bay area's homeless encampments. >> in this community where we have so much wealth, we had several people lose their lives because tfer too cold. that should not happen. >> volunteers will continue passing out the blankets and

supplies throughout the weekend. ehc life builders will be bringing in additional beds at three of its shelters. 375 beds can be found at ehc's santa clara county shelters. snow and some pockets in the bay area are proming caltrans to pull out the snowplows. yesterday it had the flow plows and sand trucks out in the urban corridors which is unusual. caltrans said its crews were patroling to make sure snow and ice don't stick on the roads. we'll have a live report from the sierra foothills with more on how the recent storm could impact your trip to the mountains. pg&e crews worked through the night to restore power it to hundreds of bay area can customers. the biggest outage was in oakland, more than 1100 people were forced to deal with the cold without power. a power outage in san anselmo left more than 600 homes and businesses in the dark. power has been restored for

nearly all of the customers. power is restored for 3600 homes and businesss in benicia. pg&e says the power outage was reported thursday night just as temperatures were dropping to their lowest levels. pg&e says an underground cable is to blame for the power outage. you can get the latest weather information at ktvu.com. . cleanup will begin in a castro valley neighborhood after large water main break. just after 7:30 last night a 12-inch wide main burst sending water gushing into a half dozen homes near seven hills road and santa maria avenue. water three to four feet deep flooded living rooms, garages and yards. 20 people were forced out of their homes. >> we were just in our living room and just heard this rushing and thought it was pouring rain or something was happening. we looked out here and the water was rushing. we came out pretty quickly.

it just was nonstop for probably a half-hour. >> that water main break also created a sinkhole. . we're following developing news. merrill newman, the 85-year-old palo alto man who was detained in north korea for six weeks, is right now on a plane headed to sfo. he will land in a couple of hours. we're live at sfo where a welcome home crowd continues to grow. >> reporter: that scheduled ?riet supposed to land at 8:58. we expect family to alive closer to that time. it's sure to be a warm welcome for the korean war veteran who has been away from his wife, family and friends for more than a month now. we have video of merrill newman in china last night on his way home. the ordeal started when merrill newman visited north korea in october. just as he was about to board a flight for china, he was

detained on october 26 and charged with hostile acts against the state. the associated press says merrill newman served in a it top secret military unit that trained south koreans to sneak into north korea during the war. during his time in custody in north korea, they released a video of the veteran apologizing for his actions. the north korean government does have a history of coercesing statements from detainees. we may learn more about the circumstances surrounding the statement as he returns to u.s. soil. he spoke with reporters briefly in china. >> i'm very glad to be on my way home. i appreciate the tolerance that the government has given to me to be on my way. >> what would you like to do first? >> go home and see my wife. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. >> pyongyang released merrill newman citing his advanced age and health. he suffers from a heart condition but was given his medication while he was detained. while he is expected home this

morning, there is still another american detained in north korea. coming up, i'll have more on the effort to bring him home and we will continue to track merrill newman's flight home and can check in with family as they arrive. back to you. . one woman is dead, another hurt, after a shooting at a hip-hop concert in vallejo last night. it happened at dan foley park just before midnight. police say multiple shooters got into a gun battle in the parking lot and say two women caught in the crossfire were innocent bystanders. a 34-year-old-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. the other victim was treated and released. the the sheriff's deputy who shot and killed andy lopez is going back to work next week. the sheriff's department says the deputy will remain on desk doubt until the district attorney decides if criminal charges will be filed. he has been off the job since the shooting on october 22.

we're going to see this actually continue to move to the south. if you are going to tahoe this weekend, still snow with an advisory over tahoe until 10:00 a.m. for the west slope droiring up to tahoe it's until 4:00 p.m. today. we have snow levels to pollock pines and in and around areas from truckee into blue canyon. snow level still fairly low, 3500 feet-4500 feet out there this morning. the winds are picking up. 8 miles per hour in nap awrks 9 in fairfield, 6 in santa rosa. it's going to be a little breezy for some into the afternoon. with this system moving through and the winds, we're a lot warmer this morning. when i say, that i'm talking 10, 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. some of us still near freezing. santa rosa 35, 35 fairfield, low 40s in and around san

the pentagon says he is traveling to afghanistan to thank troops for their service. he does not plan to meet with afghan president karzai who is can currently in a dispute with the white house because he is refusing to sign a security agreement that would allow u.s. troops to stay in afghanistan past 2014. defense secretary chuck hagel announced that the afghan defense minister reassured him that the security deal will be signed in a timely manner. a high school in illinois is making headlines for a controversial new policy that requires students to submit to random alcohol tests. the school is owfd chicago. this fall the private catholic school began weekly alcohol testing. using hair samples the tests can reveal if a student has had more than an occasional glass of wine in the past 90 days. >> this policy is aimed at helping kids say no and aimed at helping sid c kids who are starting to get into the has been ift using alcohol change.

welcome back to mornings ono 2. >> we begin this half hour with sloping news. just about 90 minutes from now the once detained meryl newman will hand at the airport. he was held for what they called hostile acts committed 60 years ago. we are live outside sfo where newman's wife will soon land. >> reporter: good morning. the flight is supposed to arrive at 8:58. local media is here, national media. we have yet to see family but i imagine they will arrive soon. it'll be a warm homecoming for this man who has been away for more than a month at this point. let me show you video of him last night as he was china. it started when he visited north korea in october but just as he was about to board a flight home he was defined. that was on october 26th and he was charged with hostile acts

brakes. >> when it starts to rain the chp recommends driving five miles an hour slower and if you are headed to the sierra where chains are required, just remember that maximum speed limit drops to 25. in preparation for the wet winter months napa is handing out sandbags. this is video from september when the napa river caused flooding. this is the first sandbag day and they will be held on the first day of each month of march first. people need too bring a shovel and gloves. >> the possibility of ice and snow have moved today's beacon lighting celebration. it remembers more than 2300 troops killed in the attack on pearl harbor. the ceremony has been moved to the ary at the cal state east bay campus in concord but the beacon will still be lit. since it was restored it'll shine even brighter. today does mark the 72nd anniversary of the attack on

pearl harbor. about 2500 marines and sailors were killed that day prompting the united states to enter the war. there are a handful of people still alive today that survived that attack including a former state senator from louisiana. >> dozens of friends and family gathered together to hold a vigil for the vallejo father shot to death. he was described as a devoted father of two. he was killed just outside his door at an apartment complex. they say brown may have been shot by a would be burglar when he stepped outside. >> it'll mean so much to my family, to his family if we can get the littlest piece of anything that will help solve this. it deserves to be solved. he didn't deserve this. >> police say they have a few witnesses but want more people to come forward in order to help solve this case. two people are recovering after the car they were in smashed into a home in the

south bay. it happened yesterday afternoon. san jose fire officials say it started when two vehicles collided. firefighters had to make a brace out of lumber to keep the wall from coming down. >> a man suspected of towning two cats who delonged to a home woman has been arrested. he was arrested yesterday. he confronted a homeless woman on pier14, witnesses say that he threw her belongings and her two cats into the bay. patterson is now facing two counts of animal cruelty and if convicted could get up to two years in jail. three teen boys have been arrested after allegedly getting two girls drunk and raping them at wild cat canyon regional park. it happened sometime late last friday night. the girls ages 14 and 17 were drinking with the boys before they passed out.

regional parks police arrested the three teens on wednesday, two are 17, the others 15. others 15. >> they have suffered a traumatic incident and these young laid yeses women are very strong. >> they are waiting for reports to see if anyone date rape drugs were used. right now its not known if the teenagers will be charged as adults. >> toppled space heat sparked a fire a fire broke out as the man and his son slept on a futon. the upper floor filled quickly. the 44 father said that he grabbed a gulp of air before going back into find his son. >> the bed was on fire and he went to grab his son and that's what there was smoke in the house. it was going and he burned his feet. >> the victim's wife who was at work said that her husband

4,000 feet and 4500 feet along highway 50 into tahoe and then around blue canyon. this will continue to change for today. there is an advisory that expires for the tahoe area at ten but for the west slope, getting up into tahoe that lasts until four this afternoon. when you have an advisory like that it means blowing snow a possibility and it could be really tough to see. this system moving through in the over night brought us a good amount of rain, some snow to our local hills and now behind it very cold air going to settle in once again, a little breezy for your afternoon and by tomorrow morning we are dealing with a freeze warning once again for the bay area. 35 degrees right now santa rosa, we are looking at 42 outside the door in san francisco, oakland at 44, i want to show you something. we get into the mid to upper 40s and stay there. so, we are looking at 44 in oakland right now. take a look at this afternoon high for oakland. we will looking at 50 degrees

behind me are lined up in hopes of getting a look at meryl newman as arrives home. we have yet to see family but we assume they are excited to see him after his detainment for more than a month. let me show you some video of him in china last night on his way home. his ordeal started when he visited in october. just as he was about to board a flight for china he was detained on october 26th and charged with hostile acts against the state. the associated press said that he served in the top secret military unit that trained south korea into sneak into north korea. during his time the government released a video of him apologizing for his actions. the government does have a history of forcing statements from detain manyes detainees so we may learn more as he returns. he did speak with reporters briefly in china. >> i'm very glad to be going

led to a deadly accident. it happened just after 12:30 near moorpark avenue a vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and hit a tree. two lanes why shut down lanes were shut down. there was only one person in the car. efforts being made to provide supplies and shelter to as many homeless as possible. four men died from the cold during this week's cold snap. three were homeless, in response the office of emergency services provided six hundred blankets to the agency. last night volunteers hit the streets passing them out and other supplies to many of the bay area's homeless camps. >> in this community where we have so much wealth and all this stuff, we had several people loose their lives because it was to cold. that should not happen. >> volunteers will continue passing out the blankets and supplies throughout the weekend. in edition they will be bringing in additional beds at

three of its shelters. right now 375 beds can be found at their santa clara shelters. >> snow prompting cal trans to pull out the snow plugs. yesterday they were out in the urban corridors, the crew was patrolling to make sure is that snow and ice didn't stick to the roadways, many are heading to hardware stores to took um on supplies. >> we are selling a lot of soup. you know and then a lot of plumbing pipes, be sure to leave early and leave plenty of distance. pg&e worked to restore power. the bingest outage was reported in oakland where more than 100 were forced to deal with the

melts by the morning but not the case today. residents here say they haven't seen this much snow fall in five to six years. i'm being told by some that they got four to six inches in their backyard. the big concern of course is the roadways, they aren't being plowed as fast as possible because resources stretched thin. highway 50 is extremely slushy and there is been a number of spin outs, drivers say when snow gets this slow it's not all fun and games. >> well, it's little bit crazy driving around this morning. i'm trying to get home. i took my wife to the airport. we didn't want to be in the snow. >> slow down. stay home if you have too. if you don't have to go out don't. >> and the chp is urging drivers to bring snow chains. we talked to a number of people who say they forgot them. the chp is advicing driver when is it gets like this make sure you go no faster than 25.

two people were in the hospital and firefighters had to make a brace out of lumber to keep that garage wall up. the bay area man suspected of drowning two cats that belonged to a homeless woman is in custody. officers arrested eric patterson on drum street. he confronted a homeless woman in san francisco, witnesses say he threw her belongings including her cats in to the bay. patterson is now facing animal cruelty and if convicted could get two years in jail. >> a father is recovering from injuries he had after saving his 3-year-old from their burning apartment. investigators believe that a toppled space heater cause the fire that broke out friday morning as they slept. the apartment filled quickly with flames and smoke. the 44-year-old father said that he first tried to put the fire out but when he realized that it was growing out of control he grabbed a gulp of air and then went back to get

shine even brighter. today marks the 72nd attack. about 2500 were killed this day prompting the united states to enter the war. there are a handful of people still alive today who survived that attack including a former state senator from louisiana. >> police say it does bear repeating. drivers need to slow down in this wet and cold weather. the highway patrol said the number of accidents always spike in bad weather and a big concern is black ice. that's when the rain turns in to standing water and then into ice. because of those freezing temperatures. it's start to spot and can cause a problem. >> if you run over black ice -- once your wheels gain traction you will hear it and then engage the brakes. >> when it starts to rain the chp recommends driving at least five miles slower an hour. then when chains are required,

keep in mind your maximum speed limit drops to 25 miles an hour. now in preparation for the wet winter months the city of napa will hand out sandbags today. are you looking at video from september, that's when the napa river caused flooding. this is the first sandbag day. they will be held the first saturday of each month action through march first and if you want one of those sandbags remember to bring a shovel and gloves and be prepared to fill them yourself. . and i'm looking at chp's website and there is a three car crash in napa, two vehicles completely destroyed. we will watch that as more information filters in. let's turn to rosemary a lot going on a lot has been going on but it looks like the system is moving out. >> yeah. the last bit of this leaving. mostly sunny, cool for your saturday as well as sunday. in fact now that the rain and the snow has moved through we will refocus on the cold

weather that will begin to move into the bay area. moving in already now that system has passed a live look there. we have san francisco way in the distance and a mix of sun and clouds this morning with just a little bit of moisture, mainly over the hills, how much rain? good amount. napa reporting almost a half inch, santa rosa -- in oakland almost looks like three tenths. san francisco nearly four tenths. we are continuing to track just a few scattered showers here. partly to mostly cloudy. mostly sunny. we are seeing a little bit of moisture over the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. highway 17 received a little bit of snow. you can see still some of that moisture remaining. this is really about it. we will be mostly sunny and dry for today. mount saint helena picked up

december 7, i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. let's say hello to rosemary orozco. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you. the rain and snow has left the area. we're left with partly cloudy skies. we'll line up the current conditions coming up in just a moment. mostly sunny and cool today, a little breezy for some. now that the system has passed through, we will focus on the cold weather for tonight and tomorrow and once again with that freeze warning planned for the bay area. we'll take a look at your rain totals and have a look at your numbers for today coming up. developing news out of san francisco international. they are carrying them there, just landing minutes ago. the 85-year-old man, they made the international headlines for being held in north korea for about six weeks. live for us this morning and at the international terminal at the airport where there is a large contingency of the reporters, all waiting for newman.

yes, absolutely with a lot of excitement here. we'll step out of the way to give you a firsthand look. that's where media, both local and national reporters are hoping that they will come in and address the crowds and you can see the cameras here, eagerly awaiting the man's arrival and the flight has landed and we do not know exactly how long it will take him to come on through customs or even if he is willing to talk to media at this point. but his son, jeff has talked to reporters in the past as newman talked with -- >> it looks like we lost katie there briefly, but we have another live picture at the international term that looking at the mic stand. i know that claudine said that it was nice to release them.

the 85-year-old was -- oh is she back? >> nope, i think that she is just trying to -- >> and north korea state news agency said they released newman. he was allowed to leave the country. mainly because he apologized for his alleged crimes during the war. the state department spokeswoman also called it a positive decision, but that they are urging them to release another american, kenneth bay, held there for another year. but right now as we look at the live pictures of sfo, again, attention right now all on newman. >> we're seeing some folks coming out of there now. it's unclear. everyone has been trying to figure out if he will come out of the doors. he did talk briefly when he came in off his flight to china. and so we did hear from him where he was glad to be on his way home and he did acknowledge that the government, they appreciate the tolerance that they have given to me to be on my way. but the first thing he wants to

do is go home and see his wife. >> yeah because remember the vice president offered him a ride home because the vice president happened to be over there in south korea and said hey, you can fly home on my plane, but respectfully he declined and said no, i want to take the first flight out and get out and see my wife. >> yeah, certainly we are hoping that when he comes out of that terminal that he will be speaking to the press and talking to us. so we'll keep an eye on that situation and when he comes out, we'll be certainly be ready to go back right to it. all right, 9:04. as we mentioned the release of newman is raising questions about kenneth bay who is now the longest serving detainee in north korea. he was found traveling with a computer disc of starving north korean orphans. last december he was charged with hostile acts and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

yesterday merrill newman's son asked people not to forget about bay. >> we hope that he too will be allowed to rejoin with his family. they are asking for more help from the united states government saying they are not doing enough to bring him home. new this morning, police say that excessive speed and wet roads brought to a deadly accident in san jose, which happened just after 12:30 this morning on the expressway. the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree. two lanes had to be shut down so crews could clean up from the crash. there was only one person in that car. also new this morning a family of four and their two cats survived a house fire. fire officials said that the flames started around 8:00 in the garage. investigators say that discarded fireplace ashes caused flames and damages, estimated at $65,000. it is mostly restricted to the

garage and living room and fortunately no one hurt. efforts are being made to provide supply and shelter to as many homeless people as possible. four men in the south bay died from hypothermia during this week's cold snap. and three of them were homeless. and in response to the emergency services, providing 600 blankets to the life builders. last night they hit the streets passing out the blankets and other supplies through many of the bay areas and the homeless encampments. >> in this community where we have so much wealth and innovation and all this stuff that we have had several people lose their lives simply because it is too cold. and that it should not have to happen. >> they will continue throughout the weekend. but in addition to the life builders, they will be bringing in additional beds at three of the shelters. right now they could be found in the santa clara shelter as they say the beds are available in san jose, sunnyvale and

gilroy. pg&e crews restored power to hundreds of bay area customers. the biggest outage was reported in oakland where more than 1,100 people were forced to deal with the cold temperatures without any power. and then an outage that lead more than 6700 homes and businesses -- 600 homes and businesses in the dark. power has been restored for all those customers affected. power fully restored to about 3,600 homes and businesses in venetia. a spokesperson for pg&e says that the outages happened yesterday morning when temperatures hovered at and below freezing. pg&e tells us an underground cable is to blame for that outage. now at ktvu.com, you can get all the latest weather information any time you need it, including a check of your radar and a storm crack or two. and giving you a look at storm tracker 2. the rain and the snow winding down. some may have plenty of sunshine as the system moves on

through. and i'm seeing a few cells pop up over the santa cruz mountains. they picked up a little bit of snow at the higher elevations. reporting just a bit as we may have some rain falling here right around boulder creek, along highway 9 as well as 236. and this is just the tail end with a few scattered showers, especially the coastal hills and mountains and the rest of us is mostly sunny and cool for your afternoon. take a look at some of these numbers. rainfall reports over the last 24 hours. picking up more than an inch. one inch, where they are reporting .35. although i saw another storm report in and around concord, picking up more than an inch. depending on where you live, you know, they are reporting about .76. piedmont hills also reporting more than about .7. morgan hill .85. so a good amount of rain is falling in the overnight hours, now we're left with mostly sunny conditions, cool conditions, and for some, breezy conditions. fairfield is reporting 13 miles

per hour. 10 in concord. 21 reported at the airport in oakland. and so behind this system, it will be cold air beginning to fill in and breezy north- northwest wind for some of us. this is what we can expect for your afternoon as well. 45 degrees right now in oakland. we're looking at 39 in walnut creek. upper 30s to the lower 40s. napa, chilly start for you want 44 in san francisco and 45 for mountain view as i do need to point out though that these numbers are warmer than yesterday and a lot by some areas, anywhere from 8 to 10 degrees warmer in areas like napa as well as fairfield and around the bay area where at least a few degrees are warmer. 50 degrees expected for your afternoon today in oakland. 49 in san francisco. 49 for redwood city. upper 40s in san jose as we need to get into the inland east bay. mid to upper 40s right around napa. 47 for fairfield and mid-40s for santa rosa as it will be a cool day, under mostly sunny skies and perhaps breezy

conditions. extended forecast here too with your bay area weekend always in view for the evening hours, mostly clear skies and temperatures, they're going to plunge once again. and back into the 20s to the lower 30s as we need to start your sunday morning and there is a freeze warning in place for the bay area, excluding san francisco. as we get into the afternoon in the upper 40s for your forecast. then temperatures, they will actually begin to warm up as we get into your workweek next week. but the freeze warning is coming in the overnight hours. we'll have details on that. one woman killed happening at the park just before midnight. the concert was being held to raise money to buy christmas gifts for needy children. police say multiple shooters got into a gunfight in the parking lot and say two women caught in the cross fire were innocent bystanders. a 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, the other victim treated and released. the deputy that shot and killed annie lopez is returning

handle the expected large number of calls. and snow started falling late last night with a winter storm warning anyfect for them at this hour -- warning in effect for them at this hour. 2,000 feet is the elevation there. they're expected to see more snow as we will drive to the mountains, you will need to bring the chains as they are required right now on interstate 80 from cold run to placer county to the interchange. and they are required from the twin bridges to meyers in eldorado county. there's a windchill advisory in effect for northeast arkansas and the missouri boot hill. they predict the readings could drop from 0 to minus 5 degrees. they brought snow, freezing rain, and sleet from the border of texas, oklahoma, and tennessee. >> and right now the nose is cold and my ears are cold and my head is cold. >> my car would not start as we would try to jump it. that didn't work and here i am,

taking the bus. >> and the storm is now heading to the capital. the ice storm, they could hit virginia and washington, d.c. tomorrow and a new system, they brought snow to the pacific northwest yesterday. and there's a chance of snow here today even in las vegas. 25,000 marathoners in texas, they're learning that you cannot run from the old man winter. the annual marathon is scheduled for tomorrow. it's been canceled. the fitness expo was also scrubbed. downtown parade, set for today and it was called off for the first time in 26 years. well the storms, they're causing delays across the nation. hundreds of flights have been canceled this weekend and dallas/ft. worth international weekend. problems are leading to a chain reaction throughout the country. sfo, duty manager tells us that close to 50 flights to and from the airport were canceled yesterday with the majority coming from texas. they didn't report any canceled flights, but there were delays up to half an hour.

and also disrupting holiday deliveries with two and a half weeks to go, the height of the holiday shipping season. fedex, and amazon, they have notified customers of the potential delays. they shipped extra merchandise. they have pulled drivers off the road because of the dangerous conditions. and the search for the missing pilot has been suspended thanks to bad weather in idaho as snow is expected to fall there for several more days. dozens of people, they have been searching for that plane registered to the software executive dale smith. it lost radio contact after smith reported engine trouble. he was traveling with two of his children. his daughter-in-law and his future son-in-law. it is unclear when those searches are going to resume. an oakland woman who lost to gun violence will take part in a rally next tuesday in washington, d.c. the 17-year- old jones was killed in a drive- by shooting outside their family's home on new year's eve

2010. no one charged in that case. jones' mother tells the tribune that she's a part of the contingency that will represent california for the homicide victims. it will be held at the washington national cathedral just two days before the anniversary of the newtown, connecticut school shooting. thousands of people are expected to gather to honor actor paul walker tomorrow. he was killed last week when the porsche he was riding in crashed. a memorial site has been growing ever since. thousands of people have rs -- rsvped at the scene where walker died. people as far as washington, d.c. plan to attend the car driven by paul walker in the fast and furious will be brought to the memorial as well. now to our continuing coverage of the death of nelson mandela. news this morning his family issued their first statement since his death saying they lost a great man. a pillar of the family whose spirit is still with them

today. memorials continue to grow outside the home where he once lived and in the johannesburg house where he died. flags are at half staff until he is laid to rest on december 15. tomorrow marks a national day of prayer and reflection. a memorial service will also be held in johannesburg on tuesday. it'll be attended by the first lady as well as george w. bush and bill clinton and former secretary of state, hillary clinton. >> that's one of the things that will get lost and the incredible personal impact that they made on the world because of the way they handled the imprisonment and conducted themselves later that he was a very, very good president. >> mandela died on thursday at the age of 95. his body is going to lie in state for three days. president obama, they phoned the widow yesterday. saying they are staying true for the profound influence that has been had on them and the

people of south africa and the entire world. z san francisco, they are going -- and san francisco, they are going to hold their memorial on wednesday at 8:00 in the morning, which will be held in the city hall and the former mayor willie brown has been asked to honor that service. the book will be available for the public sign and the mayor's office all of next week. new this morning the defense secretary will be flying to afghanistan. the surprise visit is a part of their week long mideast tour, which is video of him yesterday meeting with the american soldiers. the pentagon says they are traveling there for their service as they do not plan to meet with the afghan president, who is currently in a dispute with the white house because he is refusing to sign the security agreement that would allow the u.s. troops to stay in afghanistan, past 2014. and then just a short time ago, hagel announced that the afghan defense minister reassure them that the security deal will be signed in a timely manner. a controversy at a catholic

awaiting the arrival of merrill newman. he's 85 years old, coming back from north korea after being detained there for six weeks. he was released citing his advanced age and health. he's on the ground and may be in customs, but we have a crew

standing by. we'll let you know when he comes out of customs and into the sfo terminal. almost one year to the day of the sandy hook school shooting. another playground is being built in honor of one of the victims. she was one of the children killed during the shooting on december 14. the theme of the playground is purple and pink, some of her favorite colors. it's being built by the sandy hook ground project. a high school in illinois making headlines for a controversy new policy requiring students to submit to random alcohol tests. it's located just outside of chicago. this fall the private catholic church began weekly alcohol testing, using hair samples to test and they are able to reveal the student who has had more than an occasional glass of beer or wine in the past 90 days. >> this policy is aimed at helping kids say no. and aimed at helping kids who

are starting to get into the habit of using alcohol change. >> the majority of the students say they support the test chain. but according to the american civil liberties union, it's an invasion of privacy. other schools around the country, they are keeping a close eye on that policy. and well that kid is making his way back to san francisco. the 5-year-old miles scott is returning to the city to support the san francisco police department and the make a wish foundation. at their annual brave the bay fundraiser. miles will be the special honor at today's event -- special honoree at today's event. he'll also participate in the santa walk and run and plunge into the bay. the san francisco's police chief son has raised $30,000 in bat kid t-shirt sales. the designer behind kid mar clothings say all the proceeds will be donated to the make a wish foundation. and at one point the website was overwhelmed by requests for that $20 tee. he says that the website is now

up and running, but the bat kid tee sold out. but there are other items still available, including sweatshirts and a beanie. the weekend is here. we'll turn to rosemary to see how we're looking so far this saturday. a freeze warning on its way? >> you're right. cold air is spilling into the bay area as this storm is now moving out of our area and into southern california. i want to show you here along i- 5 and the grapevine now having trouble. grapevine right about 1,500 feet in elevation. but now again they're beginning to see the rain/snow mix and perhaps some snow. so if you or if you know somebody traveling to southern california for the weekend, be prepared for that and we've been talking about the sierra all morning long. with chains required there as well. let's come home and talk about our weather here with a few showers as you can see popping up around santa cruz and into the hills. we've had some snowfall over highway 17 in the overnight hours, right about 1,800 feet or so snowfall over mt. helena.

developing news from san francisco international where just about 30 minutes ago. a man being held in north korea landed back home right here in the bay area. and welcome back to mornings on 2 everyone, i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. 85-year-old merrill newman detained in north korea for six weeks. but this morning he's a free man back in the united states. his united airlines flight from

beijing landed at sfo just before 9:00 this morning. z you are taking a live look at the international terminal in the arrival of the arrival area of the airport. and where a largecontingency of the reporters have gathered, waiting for them to come on out of the doors. you're looking at it right now. we've seen passengers from the various international flights come on out. but so far no sign of the man. his family is expected to be on hand to greet him once he does come out. and now newman was released by north korea and reported the time yesterday. he was surrounded by the reporters when he arrived in beijing. the korean war veteran was visiting north korea when he was pulled off the flight of china on october 26 and charged with hostile acts against the state. he was released, citing the advanced age and health. and i'm very glad to be on my way home. and i appreciate this, the tolerance. and what the government has given to be beyond that way. >> the first thing what would you like to do? >> the wife. [ laughter ] >> yes, thank you very much.

>> and north korea, they released a video of newman apologizing for their actions during the korean war. he has a history of statements from detainees, so the circumstances of the video remain unknown. he served in a secret unit that claimed south koreans sneaking into north korea. >> can the release of merrill newman release new questions about kenneth bay? he's the longest serving detainee since the end of the korean war from the bay area. his mother was allowed to visit him in north korean he was arrested in november of last year when found traveling with a computer disk containing pictures of starving north korean orphans. well last december he was charged with hostile acts against north korea and sentence today 15 years of hard labor. yesterday, merrill newman's son asked people not to forget about bay. >> and we hope that he too will be allowed to rejoin with his

family. >> and the family, they are asking for more help from the united states government, saying that they are not doing enough to bring them home. and well dozens of friends and family members gathered tomorrow last night to hold a vigil for the father shot to death on his doorstep. the 26-year-old lydell brown is described as a devoted father of two and a die hard raiders fan. police say that he was killed just outside of his door at the apartment complex on carolina street. they say that brown, they may have been shot bit wood-be burglar as they stepped outside. >> it will mean so much for my family and to his family and if, you know, you can get the littlest piece of anything that would help to solve this and because it deserves to be solved as they did not deserve this to happen. >> and police say that they do have a few witnesses and they are asking for the public for help to track down the shooter. two people are recovering this morning after the car that they were in, they smashed into a home in the south bay. and it happened yesterday

afternoon, on meridian avenue. they say that it started when two vehicles collided, sending one to the front of the garage. two people were hospitalized and they had to make a big brace out of lumber, just to keep the gradual from collapsing. >> the bay area man is suspected of drowning two cats, belonging to a homeless woman that is now in custody as they arrested eric leroy patterson yesterday afternoon. they said that he confront add homeless woman last month in san francisco and witnesses, they say that patterson threw the belongings, including her cats into the bay. and patterson is now facing two counts of felony and animal cruelty and if convicted could get up to two years in jail. three teenage boys, they have been arrested after allegedly getting two girls drunk and raping them at wildcat canyon park in richmond as it happened some time late last friday night as they say the girls ages 14 and 17 were drinking with the boys before passing out. regional parks police arrested three teenagers on wednesday

and two are 17 years old and the other is 15. >> they have suffered a traumatic incident. and that these young ladies are very strong and they are doing everything that they can to recover. >> investigators say they are waiting for the toxicology reports to see if any date rape drugs were used. right now it's not known if they will be charged as adults. three community colleges will be -- will be receiving a facelift. the goal is to modernize the aging building to improve the accessibility and energy efficiency. to fix the city commissioners. and in all 2,700 police radios.

and that will cost between $27 million. working for months to prepare the system that they describe as unreliable. the radio malfunctioned during president obama's visit last year. police in vallejo are looking for three people that robbed a bank of america. it happened early thursday morning. and three masked men entered the bank from a teller, taking off in the small silver sedan. anyone with information is asked to call police. the possibility of ice and snow has forced today's annual beacon lighting celebration to be moved. the event commemorates thousands of troops killed in the japanese attack on pearl harbor on december 17, 1941. it's been moved to the east bay campus in concord, but the beacon, they will still be lit. organizers say that it will be shining brighter. today marks the attack on pearl harbor about 2,500 marines and sailors were killed that day, prompting the u.s. to enter their war with a handful of

people that are still alive today and the service people that were involved in that attack. and they were survived, including the former state senator from louisiana. and law enforcement, they say that it bares repeating that they need to slow down. as they say a number of accidents are always spiking in bad weather and that's the concern for them. and falling rain, turning into standing water and roadways and freezing temperatures are happening overnight. it will be hard to spot and they can cause vehicles to hydroplane after losing traction. now, in preparation for the winter months, they're handing out a bag for them in september when they would need to cause some flooding. that's the first sandbag distribution, that will be held the first saturday of each month through march 1 and people, they need to bring a shovel and gloves and to be prepared to build their own bags of sand. giving you a live view here

from mt. hamilton. take a look at this of mt. hamilton i should say. the observatory is right about 3,200 feet and a dusting of snow in the area. we picked up a little bit of snow over the santa cruz mountains in the sierra. anywhere from 24 inches to 30 inches reported over some of the ski resorts. that's great news. now, here we are left with the partly sunny skies over the southern half of the bay area and into santa cruz and the rain pretty much out of here, even though picking up a few cells earlier today. and they have shifted to the areas right around here for them and just east. a few scattered showers are falling along highway 1. let's head to the sierra because the snow continues to fall here where we are again, seeing a pretty good amount of the last couple of days i should say, 24 hours to 30 hours or so. heavenly reporting 30 inches of fresh snow. snow level all the way down into the foothills. we've had live reports from

placerville this morning with the snow there and placerville right about 1,800 feet. all the way down to about 1,200 feet in some cases. so if you're going to the sierras for today, they will be remaining there. plus, we're pretty much done with the rain, but take a look at this, reporting .47 inches. .41 in santa rosa and a little more than .3 in oakland. san francisco picking up almost .4 in san jose. some areas are picking up an inch or so and so it has moved on and behind it, we will be breezy and cool for today. fairfield is reporting about 13 miles per hour right now. 21 at the airport. reporting 15 miles per hour with the temperature wise, upper 30s to the upper 40s around the bay area. right now, 39 to santa rosa and oakland and a cool start, although not as cool as yesterday morning. we'll get back to the cooler numbers. hold on just a moment. we'll take a look at the highs, perhaps 50 degrees in oakland

for the second half of your afternoon, which is really about it. it will be a cool day and your extended forecast here with your bay area weekend always in view. the storm is pretty much behind us. looking at cold weather to return with a freeze warning for the entire bay area excluding san francisco as they will be a lot colder as they need to get there tomorrow morning. and a minor warm up as they head into the business week. well time is 9:40 and new this morning president obama is calling on congress to take care of those hurt most by the recession. and right now more than one million of our fellow americans are poised to lose the vital lifeline. just a few days after christmas. if congress doesn't do something about it. >> and this morning's weekly address, the president says is that before lawmakers leave for the holiday break that they will need to extend the unemployment benefits to about 1.3 million americans. those benefits, they will need to end at the end of the year.

son walk out of the airport. brought down to the hall way and escorted by the security to come to the podium for just a moment where he said that he is happy to be back and that he is tired, but that he had an ear- to-ear grim as you can tell he is very excited to see his wife, family, friends, all here to greet him as well as he would not answer any questions, regarding the treatment or his time in north korea, but that he will be headed home at this point after being detained in north korea for 42 days. but again, ear-to-ear smiles, all is well here at san francisco airport. they just left a couple moments ago. live at sfo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, katie, thank you for the update. there are new concerns about a group of whales that were found stranded in the everglades. 20 whales have broken up, and they will be just a few miles from the beach. they are hoping that the whales will be headed back for the deeper colder weathers, former a habitat about 20 mile on out

to sea. >> it is welcoming news for the holiday travelers. some are randomly being chosen to freeze through the security. it's a service that they pay for, but some are being picked for a one-time use of that special line. they say that's because the agency, they are now focusing on the risk-based security plan. >> and they are giving us a chance to focus on the people that we don't know a lot about so we can screen them more effectively. >> we just went through with no shoes. you don't need to take your coats off, they don't look in your bags, nothing. >> travelers in the tsa pre- checked lines don't need to take off their belts or jackets at the check point. they also don't need to take out their laptops or liquids out of the bag. adding non-stop flights. the services expected to start in june. right now the delta, it's the only there offering the non- stop service to salt lake city, alaska airlines, as they say that the tickets, they will be available starting next week.

and later today, united states airlines will be hosting a fantasy flight to the north pole on out of san francisco international airport. and about 50 young children from oakland children's hospital. and the medical center, they will all be on that flight. that will take a short trip around the bay area and then it will come back to sfo to a different gate that will look just like the north pole. the children will be able to meet santa, eat refreshments and get a few gifts before returning home. it's a switch from the tolltakers to save them miranda warnings but not as much as originally planned. 28 full-time job seekers will be making room for the new system. but now 25 customer service reps have had to be hired to yield phone calls from confused customers. they say due to the overwhelming number of calls, websites that they need to visit that the system has required costly upgrades. we're saving money for the programs. and so yes, there's been some

confusions, but it's not massive. >> they say that they are saving more than $1 million in the salaries of the toll takers alone. people with disabilities fear that they could be hurt the most with the transit labor disputes that are not resolved. about 4,000 passengers use it each weekday while many could turn to backup plans in case of the third strike. z they may be stuck with limited or no other modes of transportation. ac transit carries more than 179,000 people each weekday. the agency is currentfully a 60- day cooling off period with employees that started on october 22. and there are privacy concerns this morning in connection to the covered california health insurance program. the spokesperson for the exchange says that they gave them names and contact information for tens of thousands of people that log on to the website to check out the coverage. their information was released, despite the fact that they specifically ask not to be

contacted. they say that it started handing out the information this week as a part of the pilot program for them to help people enroll in the december 23 deadline. information does not include social security numbers or incomes. the san francisco police department is increasing security for tomorrow's big game between the seattle seahawks and the 49ers. police are concerned that the intense rivalry between the two teams, they might spread to the fans, which will be leading to brawls like the fistfights we saw between the 49ers and the raider fans. seahawks reporters have gone online, asking about whether or not it is safe at candlestick park. >> i think that, you know, i've been getting quite a few e- mails saying my son is going to the game, should he wear his jerseys or i'm bringing my girlfriend, you know, am i going to be safe? >> and now some san francisco police officers, they are going to be under cover. dress in seattle gear. now we have a way for you to show your pride with a friendly competition going on with our sister station in

night's event. it was also about next year's big event, coming up with nine nominations. they will be held on sunday, january 26. and the childhood home of walt disney is getting a makeover, announcing their plans to renovate the home as they say that it will be restored to what it looked like in 1901. the project is expected to be finished some time next year. when complete, it will be reopened as the non-profit museum. and now the story of kado. after being robbed twice, they tracked down the four-legged thief, his name is kado. he got off his leash, making a break for some of the nearby stores. around the same time the manager of the dollar store noticed the beef bones and the dog treats disappearing from the show. when they looked at surveillance video, she saw kado sneaking in and running out with those treats. >> taking him out to the car wash over here mind the the grass, digging hole -- behind the grass and digging holes and
